What does freedom have to do with an elephant? (No, this is not a riddle!) This is a much deeper thought that I’ve had for a long time about the shackles of sin and the freedom that we have when we surrender to Truth.
“Who is Truth?” you ask. Truth is a person. His name is JESUS. HE is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6). People are offended by Truth but it is the truth that will set us all free. My question is WHY would anyone want to embrace bondage and not be set free??!
This 4th of July weekend America is preparing to celebrate our freedom as a country. As a Christian, I realize this is so much more than a mere platitude.
“How can I feel free when there’s a huge ‘elephant in the room’?!”
Have you ever heard that idiom? What does it mean? And what does it have to do with truth and freedom?
Is there something you just don’t want to bring up in conversation or feel that you don’t dare to discuss because it’s just too uncomfortable? There are SO many proverbial “elephants in the room” these days! We fear being correct - personally, socially, or especially (bup, bup, bum...) politically. Where is the freedom of our mind? Why do we still believe that we cannot break free?
We feel big and bold and strong, yet we are held captive in our perspective. When we embrace Truth, we can filter the situations around us through Him who is so much stronger than we are. Jesus will break us free!
The Bible tells us that the truth will set us free. I know I can always depend on God’s Word. So I encourage you. Whatever it is that is holding you back, speak it out. Confess it. Tell Jesus about it. Give Him your heart. Give Him your burdens. Then you will be set free!
John 8:30-36
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
When a person confesses his sin and gives his life to Christ, he is unyoked - free to move about the country per se. What a wonderful thing to no longer be held back. The perception of what was real is now loosed!
“For freedom, Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1
The GREAT NEWS is that each of us is free to make the choice to oppose sin by choosing Truth!
