Unity ~ Becoming One With God

Updated: Nov 3, 2023

What is the root word of Unity? Unit.

What is a unit? An individual thing or person regarded as single and complete but which can also form an individual component of a larger or more complex whole.

A determinate quantity (as of length, time, or VALUE) adopted as a standard of measurement.

What is the standard? Is it unity?

Acts 17:28

“…for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’ “

Verse 27 says

“God did this so that they would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from any one of us.”

We don’t have to look far. He is right here with us - united together, dwelling in us.

In Isaiah 55:6-7 we read

“Seek the LORD while He may be found,

Call upon Him while He is near.

Let the wicked forsake his way,

And the unrighteous man his thoughts;

Let him return to the LORD,

And He will have mercy on him;

And to our God,

For He will abundantly pardon.”

Seek Him while He may be found!

You are an individual who is much bigger and much greater than just yourself. Each of us is part of a larger or more complex whole.

Unity.

Consummated with Christ.

What is the root word there? Consume. Consumed.

I think of being consumed by fire. Completely engulfed. 🔥🔥🔥

What is the fire of God? His Spirit - the Holy Spirit.

God made our bodies to function as vessels for His Holy Spirit. We are never truly alive unless we consummate our relationship with God, allowing His Holy Spirit to be in us.

Jesus, speaking here in the gospel of John, said, “…that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.”

John 17:21-23

How do you, as an individual, become one with God? Very simply, you start to listen for God’s voice, hear what He says, and do what He leads you to do when He says to do it.

When you do this, you begin to live by revelation as Adam did in Eden. You live as Jesus did and fulfill the law by walking in the Spirit. Walking in the Spirit is living by revelation. Your actions are not your own as they become the actions of God manifest in your flesh.

In the beginning, we were one. God manifested through Adam’s flesh to this creation. There was no separation of body, soul, and spirit. We were one as God is one and, therefore, one in Him.

Father, that we may become one.

Jesus speaks a prayer in John chapter 17, asking that believers be restored to our pre-fallen, sinless state of Eden. It is the reuniting reintegration of God and man into one manifestation of our Father on this earth. His kingdom comes as His will is done, by revelation, on Earth as it is in heaven. Jesus is the head, and we are his body, and together, we shall be one with God for all eternity.

Apart from Christ, we are a broken people. Sin shatters. Sin destroys.

A split with God happened the moment that Adam and Eve ate of the Tree of the Knowledge of good and Evil. Revelation left, and natural reasoning took over. That rift between God and man left us void of Spirit. The Holy Spirit, given on the day of Pentecost, began to restore oneness through revelation.

It is written,

“And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.”

Revelation 21:5

You become one with Who you unite with.

Revelation 21 goes on to say in verse 6,

“And He said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.’ “

God gives us the chance to be restored - to be united and then re-united with Him for all of eternity. He restores all things back to their original, straight from the manufacturer, status.

Even we are to be restored,

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

2 Corinthians 5:17

Let me ask you, “What have you united your soul with?”

Have you unified, and consummated yourself with Christ? Have you tied your soul with Him?

Have you become one with Him?

Have you allowed Him to be in you and working through you?

We are the bride of Christ.

As we cease from our own labors, moving as He moves, all our cares and worries fade away. We are lost in His love, as the Song of Solomon depicts. Becoming one with Him, we cease to be a separate person, submerging ourselves in everything that He wants us to be. We, as it were, take our place at His side to once again be near His heart.

This provokes a lot of questions we must ask ourselves.

  • Am I keeping myself near to the heart of God?

  • Is what I have aligned myself with something that is for my good and my growth or do I need to shake it off and move beyond it?

  • How can we grow in the Word - grow in God? The way we do that is by ridding ourselves of unhealthy attachments.

Let me ask you this -

Are you allowing weeds to take over the garden of your life? - That perfect Eden place of your life? That place where you were unscathed and originated, created in perfection, knit together in your mother’s womb?

Are you cultivating good soil so it can unite with the seeds that have been sown into you and experience healthy growth?

Be very careful! Don’t unite with things that can choke the good fruits out of your life!

Truth is in the phrase, “United we stand, divided we fall.”

We see in Matthew 12:25, "Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand." In other words, "United we stand; Divided we fall." Unity makes all things possible, but disunity ensures nothing but ruin.

Are you allowing yourself to be united with God, your Creator? Are you listening to His voice? Or are you being deceived by the One who says it’s ok to eat forbidden fruits?

We need to recognize and live in the holy order that God created. It matters. United or Untied? There is only a slight variation between the two words, but a vast difference!

Sometimes, you need to rid yourself or untie from someone or something that is trying to unite with you that is unhealthy or, especially, ungodly.

There is great wisdom in Proverbs 13:20. “He who walks with wise men will be wise,

But the companion of fools will be destroyed.”

Search your heart and ask yourself, “What am I uniting myself with or coming into agreement with?”

Of utmost importance, WHO are you uniting with - becoming one with?

Psalm 139:23-24 KJV

Search me, O God, and know my heart: Try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.

Be Blessed,
